The theory of injection molding can be reduced to four simple individual steps: Plasticizing, Injection, Chilling, and Ejection. Each of those steps is distinct from the others and correct control of each is essential to the success of the total process.

Green sand casting is a mixture of VERY fine Sand and clay in specific proportions, which readly forms the shape of objects that it is packed around. It can be made with water. When squeezed in the hand it retains the shape of your hand when you let go. If you take it in your hands and break it, it breaks cleanly without loosing its shape.

How to use your Green Sand Casting mix:

Add +-5% by weight of water. A pint of water weighs a pound. If you have 50 lbs of dry sand you should add about 2.5 lbs(pints) of water. 2.5 pints is equal to 5 cups of water.

Mulling is pressing the sand/water/clay mix together under weight to coat the grains of sand with clay which helps the mold hold its shape. Expensive machines are made for this, but if you get one of those black plastic cement mixing tubs and walk around scraping with your feet on the sand that works well.

This product can be used for sand candles, or other types of casting as it will hold the shape of any item you press into it. After using this sand, you can recycle it and reuse it, discarding burnt, fused pieces and adding water and re-mulling it.

The casting box pictured below and the Spa Spoon that we cast took about 80 lbs of sand in order to fill the mold. Ram the mold tightly to insure that the mold will retain it’s shape when you pour your metal, glass, wax, etc into the mold. You may want to put weight on top of the mold before pouring to insure that the mold will not “float” apart.
