Overview

There are two parts that create moldings:

  • Injection molding machine
  • Plastic injection tooling

Injection molding machine:

Injection molding is the process of transforming raw polymer into final complex plastic components through the aid the injection mold machine which heat plastic, then apply high pressure on the molten plastics to inject and fill the mold cavity.

An injection mold tool consists of two halves. One model half contains the sprue bushing and runner system. The other half houses the ejector system. The molded part is located at the parting line.

We will treat this in more further detail later on.

Mold tool

A mold tool is constructed from a number of sections but the three main section is:

  • Fixed hall

This contains the cavity of the part to be molded

  • Moving hall

This contains the care of the part to be molded

  • Ejector plate

This contains the ejector pins which push the molded part of the core

One half of the mold tool will have the cavity or the female section of the mold, this half is also where the molten plastic is injected through the sprue runner system. This will be the fixed part of the mold.

The moving part at the mold will have the core or male part of the mold. This section will also include the ejection plate and pins.

The two halves of the molding are separated down a parting line. This is where the two halves of the tool match up.

Clamping

Overview

The clamping unit is what holds the two halves of the mold together during the injection process.

There are three different types of clamp design:

Toggle clamp: is a mechanical device to amplify force. In a molding machine, which consists of two bars joined together with a pivot? The end of one bar is attached to a stationary platen; the other end of a second bar is attached to the moveable platen. When the pressure is applied to the pivot, the two bars form a straight line.

Hydraulic clamp: a clamping unit actuated by hydraulic cylinder, which is directly connected to the moving hall of the tool.

Overview

Hydromechanical clamp: this clamping system is a combination of mechanical and hydraulic clamping system to move the toggle a hydraulic cylinder is operated. You see the hydraulic ram closed the tool and the mechanical mechanism has locked the tool in place during the injection process.

Injection of polymer into the plastic mold

Overview

The molten polymer is pushed up to end of the injection cylinder by the use of a specially designed rotating screw. Once there are enough molten polymers at the end of the cylinder, the screw then forces it into the mold at a controlled speed and pressure. You can this part of the process here in the short clip.

The Morgan-Presses are versatile injection molding machines designed to reduce the costs of production.  Its unique design was especially developed to make injection molding of plastic molded parts practical and economical in the quantities required for rapid prototyping and low-volume production.  This makes it ideal for model shops, medical device manufacturers, R & D labs, and many other plastic injection molding applications that require short-run production needs.

Features on all Morgan’s injection molding machines:

  • Solid State Temperature Controllers – featuring digital set-point and readout, 3-mode proportioning and programmable controls, 0-800°F/0-430°C 1/8 DIN modular units.
  • Injection Speed Control – for adjusting injection speeds slower and faster where cavity fill rates are critical
  • Heavy duty cast aluminum construction
  • Hardened and chrome-plated barrels (material melt cylinders)
  • Precision ground chrome-plated stanchion rods
  • Generous 8″x11″ (maximum) mold plan area

The theory of injection molding can be reduced to four simple individual steps: Plasticizing, Injection, Chilling, and Ejection. Each of those steps is distinct from the others and correct control of each is essential to the success of the total process.

Plasticizing – describes the conversion of the polymer material from its normal hard granular form at room temperatures, to the liquid consistency necessary for injection at its correct melt temperature.
Injection – is the stage during which this melt is introduced into a mold to completely fill a cavity or cavities.
Chilling – is the action of removing heat from the melt to convert it from a liquid consistency back to its original rigid state. As the material cools, it also shrinks.
Ejection – is the removal of the cooled, molded part from the mold cavity and from any cores or inserts.
Repetition of these basic steps in sequence is the process of injection molding.

The practice of injection molding
The practice of injection molding varies from the theory, only in as much as process limitations and available equipment affect it. Step by step process is explained in ST’s Cutting Costs in Short-run Plastic Injection Molding guide.

You may be considering casting (sometimes called “pouring”) molds using concrete, cement, plaster, ceramic material, wax, soap, and even hypertufa is used as a medium.

Plastic Mold (sometimes spelled “plastic mould“) can be made from a variety of materials. There are latex or rubber molds. These are generaly expensive to purchase and take a fair amount of expertise to use. They give great detail and beautiful results when used properly.

Many of these are made to order, so delivery time is 3 -5 weeks after you have placed an order and paid your money. This is a long wait if you are just starting off in the hobby or business.

Your investment in plastic molds will be considerable and even with several hundred dollars worth of molds you may only have 5 – 10 different castings to offer your customers.

I recommend that you start with the much cheaper and easier to use rigid or semi rigid plastic molds. They are  inexpensive and will give you an excellent feel for mixing and casting whichever medium you are interested in. If you invest $150 to $200 in these you will have 20 or 30 different castings to sell and be well on your way to making some money!

Plastic molds can normally be ordered and delivered within 5 -7 working days. You are in business as soon as you recieve your molds as most retailers will include instuctions. These molds are very durable and will give you a great start in you casting business.

The choice is yours.

We will be adding to this site as time permits and will be happy to answer any questions you have. Please ask!

Plastic injection molding Manufacturing

Plastic Molds and Plastic injection molding is one of the most commonly used molding processes used globally. There are many interesting facts regarding plastic injection molding machines. Injection molding machines vary in sizes they can range to a size of table to as large as your whole room as well. Some injection molding machines have the capacity to produce around 200million plastic molds in one year.

The prices of injection molding machines are also very high. A latest technology molding machines can easily cost $750,000. There are also some molding machines which requires no human resource to operate them they are totally automated. Molding machines needs to be operated with lot of safety and precautions because if a person’s gets in between the mold during the production run the person will be completely crushed into half. Plastic injection molding machines also requires a lot of maintenance which mostly depends on the number of hours the machine is operated daily.

In order to produce consistent plastic parts that too at the fastest cycle time possible to reduce injection molding cost, you need to basically produce its parts in the injection molding process, because it helps in designing and building a mold that will help achieve the above target. There are plastic types that need a cold mold whereas there are some that require hotter mold.

You can do the better cooling mold in various ways depending up the type of plastic to reduce cycle time, but there is this common practice that is followed at a large scale for doing the cooling mold is by drilled holes which basically create a circuit consisting of an in port as well as an out port. This practice is suitable for plastic parts which happen to be square or rectangular. They can also be made the most of by using them in the mold plates as per the need.

By using this method, you are potentially saving more money because this method happens to very economical when it comes to installing water into an injection mold. Just as you would do the cooling of the mold, it is advisable that you do the heating mold up to 200°F. In case the plastic you are dealing with, requires some hotter temperature, then you will need to use hot oil in the waterlines.

We have shared with you some of the most common options that you find available for doing mold cooling in injection molding. There’s this point which must not be done and should be avoided which is to not let mold size as well as the mold cost cause you to actually clear off the corners on the mold cooling by cutting.

injection mold parts issue solution

It is a headache to run into the problem of product mucosal in injection mold  parts, it not only requires a lot of manpower and material resources to take product out from the mold, but also affected the company’s production efficiency, increasing cost to the company.

But how can we solve the problem of injection mold products mucosa?

At first, we should find out the reason of mucosal. As follows:

1.Bad polishing , for example, it is stick before the mold, May be because after the die polishing better than the previous die polishing   Die tryout mold in the production process directly stick in the former mould.

2. Draw taper design may be unreasonable. In theory, front mould draw taper   is larger than rear mould draw taper. Putting the draw taper in wrong side may also result to product sticking in the former mould.

3. The exits of a vacuum lead to product binding on the front mould.  It is a common phenomenon to the Shell, box products.
4. Bad polishing may lead to the rear mould mucosa.mold manufacturing in China

5. Mold temperature is too low at the beginning, the product hold too much power to the product.

So we have understanding the reason of mucosal in the test mould, our suggestion of the problem as follows:

1,We must pay more attention to the front mould, the front mould’s polishing should be better than rear mould.

2, For the box, shell and other products, if there is vacuum in front mould, we should use exhaust pin to eliminate the influence of vacuum, but sometimes rear mould need exhaust pin too.

3, If product structure asking for the mould the temperature, we should increase the temperature when testing mould.

4, We can set reasonable injection parameter according to the characteristic of the plastic raw materials, then reducing the possibility of plastic product’ mould sticking.
